A Request to the Technically-Minded
The PS2 is still not working.

The issue is that it won't play discs. Everything else seems to work perfectly. I'm not getting Disc Read Errors, but I did around half a year ago, when my brother and I used an online guide to fix it through adjusting the tilt wheel. It was harrowing and arduous, but it started playing games again, until I left for uni again, and my brother then never used it...so when I brought it down here, it flickered between not reading discs and reading them with only occasional long pauses on the loading. The problems never lasted longer than a day, however.

On Monday this week, we came back to find it wasn't reading CDs. Okay, fine. On Tuesday, it did the same, until I changed the CD and changed it back again, and then I was able to play games and the like well into the evening. However, on Wednesday morning it was back to not working, and has been doing so ever since.

Upon turning on, or loading the CD (any CD), it will do one of three things. Most often, it will start making a low rumbling noise, and will refuse to acknowlege there is a CD in the driver. The 'Browser' screen will just read 'Reading Disc' without end. The second possibility is that it goes to the 'Playstation 2' screen and then stops, without making any funny noises, and never actually reaching the game. The third, which sometimes follows the first, is that it goes to the 'Please insert format disc' screen, and thus thinks the PS2 CD in the drive is not a PS2 CD...

So, as far as I see it, we have four options:

a) Attempt to manually repair it. This would, of course, depend on what the problem is. I’ve read three different solutions, being, namely, lubing the tracker, whatever that is, cleaning the lens with alcohol, and adjusting the tilt wheel thing. We did the latter back in March, and it worked, but the error then was different…we’re not getting ‘Disc Read Errors’ now, but rather ‘Please Insert PS2 Format Disc’, or, more regularly, nothing but whirring or grinding noises…

b) Send it to a professional. This is, of course, costly, as Sony have no soul. It might also not work. I don’t know of anyone else I could send it too, however…

c) Pack it in, and buy a new one. This would be worthwhile, as I still have a stack of unplayed games, and it would mean I could still play KH2 and FFXII at their respective release dates, but this is a costly option, especially given how, in order to avoid getting a similarly-afflicted PS2 in return, we’d need to get them first-hand at around £95!

d) Pack it in, sell everything, and use the money for other things. It would be a shame, given the effort required, and how the unplayed games would sell for less than I bought them for, but it would allow us to use something else. It’s a while before the Wii comes out, however, and I’ve little desire to get an X-Box of anysort, let alone a PS3!

Any advice would be most appreciated!

I don't need anyone telling me 'PS2 CD-drives are rubbish', by the way: I already know! >_

Have you tried standing the PS2 up on its side? My PS2 showed the same symptoms as yours, but when I stood it on its side, it started reading all my discs perfectly. I have no idea why that is, but hey, it works! :D

I've tried just about every possible angle, I'm afraid!
It never worked amazingly well vertically anyhow ;_;
Thankyou for the advice, though! ^-^

;_; *hugs lots*

It seems, from your post, that you've already tried everything else I would suggest.

You're welcome, though. :) I'm glad I could at least try to help.

I heard that putting it on its side is what buggers it up. I always keep mine flat and turned off, never on standby only once it didnt play a disc, but I have some wipes and put them all back. Im not really sure otherwise.. if the warrenty expired then you can't get it fixed/replaced x.x

It depends on what model it is...mine is an old 30001 model, due to getting it second-hand four years ago, which means it suffers far more from inherent disc drive problems than the newer models...

Sony will repair, but they'll charge you £50. I read they've been taken to court in the US over this once or twice...

Yeah. And their class-action settlement forces them to fix PS2 disc problems at no charge, whether or not the warranty's been voided. :D (They won't fix modded PS2s, though.)

It'd be nice if something to that effect would be done where you are, though it's probably too late, since the manufacturing defects in the old models have been all but fixed. :/

I just wish I could help more.

You could wait and get the PS3, which will play the PS2 games, but it's gonna cost a bomb. I say try the same method as before, or try the alcohol thing (I've heard that being used on CD players and stuff, sounds fairly standard). If it's broken anyway, you can't do much worse, right?

I kinda figured that, if it is bust, I've nothing to lose through manual repair...but I won't buy a PS3. I've been too let down with the shoddy shelf-life of the PS2 to fall for Sony's cost-cutting again.

Yeah, they're on about charging £600 or something. The Nintendo Wii is gonna be like, £150, and I can't see the xbox being more than £300.

All I can say is to borrow a wisdom tip:
Does it work on it's side?
Does it work upside down?
Does it work with other discs?
Does it work with DVD's?
Does it work with games?
Does it work with audio cd's?

If putting it on it's side, it's an alignment problem. If putting it upside down, then it's a focus problem. If it reads all other discs, the disc is the problem (duh!), If it works with only DVD's but not games, then it might simply need to be cleaned, same vice versa. Audio CD's/PSX games use a wider laser beam, and may still work, or might not work at all, if it reads one but not the other(dvd/game vs cd/psx) then it's probably mis-aligned, out of focus, or the track might even be dirty.

I'd recommend, before replacing, to try clean it. If it's a non-redesign model, this would be hard and I'd recommend buying a new PS2. If it's a new type PS2, then you can clearly see the lens. Use compressed air and very lightly blow into the drive. If you use too much force it will just snap the wire and ruin it completely.

If it's been adjusted before (people who mod ps2s to play copies do this), then it might reach the end of the adjustment range and that's it anyway. If you are smart enough and have small enough tools, and hours of patience, you can adjust it yourself, but really, it's easier to break a ps2 by sneezing on it once the cover is off. Speaking from experience (I fixed one PS2 that had a misaligned tray) There are way too many parts and you are lucky if you can get the controller/memory card PCB back in without breaking it.

Seems like everyone has suggested what i was thinking....but this may be an odd thing - It's saying "disk not read?" Well have you tried cleaning the lens of the reader? You can buy the cleaner from most stores and it worked a miracle for mine.
